William Bird from Media Monitoring said, “it is profoundly unfortunate that someone in such a senior position has failed to grasp the basics of the law in relation to the public broadcaster.”
Bird said interference in the public broadcaster is particularly concerning, “precisely because it’s a public broadcaster not a state broadcaster, it means you cannot allow that level of direct interference in the SABC, otherwise it is effectively state-controlled.
“The whole point of a public broadcaster is that it isn’t state-controlled it’s funded and supported by public funds but for the minister and the shareholder to be involved in the affairs of the SABC is wrong, it’s illegal, it goes against our current laws, it goes against African principles and freedom of expression.”
