Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) was established in 1993 in Johannesburg, South Africa and, since then, has evolved from a pure monitoring-based project to an innovative organisation which implements successful media strategies for change. We use technology, social media and data tools to make our work more efficient and effective.

 

MMA acts as a watchdog, taking on a role to promote ethical and fair journalism which supports human rights. We promote democracy and a culture where the media and the powerful respect human rights to encourage a just and fair society.

MEDIA AND PUBLIC SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

The Public and Media Skills Development Unit is responsible for supporting and facilitating MMA’s projects that inform, upskill and enable the general public and the Media, so they are empowered to participate within the new media environment.

Research Monitoring and Analysis

The Monitoring, Research and Analysis program’s goal is to achieve an accountable, diverse and empowered media where reporting is ethical, data-driven and citizen-focused. The program contributes to MMA’s overall goal.

LITIGATION, ADVOCACY AND LOBBYING

Without freedom, the voice of the media cannot be heard and their vital role in democracy cannot be maintained- At the same time, if the media do not fulfil this role professionally and responsibly, they can undermine democracy.

Community Development and Building

The primary mandate of this unit is to ensure that media is accountable to their audiences through active citizenry and driving media literacy within the public and in various communities and forums.
