At least 60% of South Africans believe that (black) immigrants are a threat to their jobs and the country’s socio-economic stability, and they should not be allowed in this country, according to the 2011 futurefact survey. This intolerance, further fuelled by ‘anti-immigrant’ stories by some tabloid newspapers such as Daily Sun, has led some analysts to question the real motives of tabloid journalism in SA.

Daily Sun, SA’s biggest-selling tabloid newspaper of all times, was found ‘guilty’ in 2009 by the Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) for fuelling the 2008 xenophobic attacks.
