Will a stronger Press Council raise local journalism standards?
Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe thinks so but Anton Harber, professor of journalism at Wits University, disagrees.
“Nowhere in the world has research linked good practice in journalism to strong or effective press councils,” Harber told a public hearing this week on the Press Council’s code, complaints procedures and constitution.
The general public did not bother to attend the sessions staged to hear the views of ordinary people.
