The bill which would have seen ordinary people paying a 1% tax to fund SABC has been suddenly withdrawn by Minister for Communications, Roy Padayachie.

SOS spokesperson, Kate Skinner, said the bill’s funding model – in which the SABC 1% tax was included – must be reconsidered.

William Bird, Director of Media Monitoring Africa, said Padayachie’s decision shows that he is committed to proper consultation, review and research. He said that the Bill had been an attempt at a quick fix for the SABC and did not benefit South Africans.
