Children were seldom accessed even in stories about them and were portrayed in roles that masked their capabilities and stripped them of their individual identity and in many cases left them devoid of any character or agency. In some cases children’s rights were violated and the information provided in some stories was superficial. However, the coverage was not all doom and gloomy as both girls and boys were covered almost equally. Going forward, media need to cover children in their diversity, access them where possible and as often as possible, portray them in roles that do not perpetuate negative stereotypes, protect their rights and provide information that empowers society.
