Last week, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) filed papers at the Constitutional Court to legally force the president to appoint the recommended 12 people as SABC board members, especially since he didn’t have the authority to change the candidates.

MMA said it was also concerned about the lack of oversight at the SABC.

In its court papers, it said:

The GCEO (Group CEO Mxakwe) is supposed to be accountable to the board. To whom now must he account? To himself? This is anathema to good governance. The SABC is operating with no financial, functional or ethical oversight.

News24 spoke to Dr Dinesh Balliah, director at the Wits Centre for Journalism, William Bird, MMA director, and Professor Herman Wasserman from the University of Cape Town to find out why this urgent court application was crucial to South Africa’s democracy.
