MMA has recently completed two separate studies, looking at Masculinity in the media and also gender discrimination in South African newsrooms. In conducting the study on gender discrimination, MMA sought to address the extent to which gender discrimination is a problem in South African media workplaces; how frequently gender discrimination occurs and to whom? The underlying causes; as well as the mechanisms for dealing with gender discrimination in South African workplaces and are they sufficient? The research on Masculinity examines the way in which masculinity is portrayed in the news media and whether this has an impact on the way in which men (and women) perceive their own social gender roles.
