MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Media Monitoring Africa believes that monitoring the media is not just about capturing and analysing data around the media’s performance. No. We believe it is a form of advocacy where data and analysis are the first step towards active and ongoing engagement with media and related civil society organisations. We believe that it will improve the quality of reporting on identified issues.
Media monitoring is a content analysis-based research technique which can be used in support of media advocacy campaigns. It provides:
- Invaluable data on media practice to advocate for better coverage of human rights issues
- Concrete figures to monitor and evaluate the performance of media and media campaigns
You can use media monitoring to track changes over time by comparing different periods, and it is one of the best ways to uncover accurate and balanced information about your media’s content.
As a human rights and democracy driven NGO, we have developed our media monitoring methodology to fit within this ideological framework. Our engagement with media and with civil society are guided and outlined by outlook to ensure we remain focused and on track.
Our approach to media monitoring is tailored to address the issues at hand, and to contribute to an overarching strategy which extends beyond just the realm of media. The process for every monitoring project is to develop and contextualise the methodology in conjunction with partners who have been selected due to their specialisations and expertise. We also use our extensive research and analysis to ensure that the process is done in accordance with best practice.
Monitors are selected and then put through an intense training programme which is designed to provide them with the tools they need to monitor accurately and consistently.
Once the monitoring process has started, MMA remains in regular contact with monitors and partners to ensure that any challenges or problems are quickly addressed.
The process tends to highlight some of the leading issues in media coverage and MMA ensures that key observations made by monitors throughout the process are captured accurately so as to inform the analysis. Based on the results, the project requirements, the overarching goals of MMA and in-country partners, a strategy is then tailored and designed to improve coverage.
MMA’s has had significant success in engaging and working with media, proving that lasting change comes about as a result of applying a comprehensive strategy.

Global Media Monitoring Project
MMA was on the planning committee and the lead data analyst for the 2005 Global Media Monitoring Project [link]. The event saw 76 countries participate, monitoring the media for a day across all 76 regions. MMA handled all the analysis from around the world for the project which was an inordinate success.
MMA has developed methodology in a variety of cooperative regional projects. These included: 2000 Gender Media Baseline Study [link] and the 2005 Media Action Plan on HIV/AIDS [link]. Both of these Southern African projects have challenged the media’s representation of key human rights issues.

POLICY, COMPLAINTS COMMISSION, EDITORIAL CODE FORMULATION
Media Monitoring Africa has significant experience in the formulation of policy. We ensure that editorial codes and media policies are in line with the constitutional values of South Africa’s democracy, as well as important international conventions. MMA has experience in a broad range of media policies which range from issues around local content and regional television, to draft editorial policies. We can use this expertise to support you and your organisation in creating policy and editorial code, among other things.

TRAINING AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Media Monitoring Africa provides training in media literacy, monitoring and media relations for NGOs, civil society and government. We also specialise in training for media practitioners on human rights issues, including reporting on gender, children, race and poverty.
