Cockroach comment “doomed” says MMA

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) believes that Julius Malema’s comparison of Premier Helen Zille to a cockroach is offensive, inappropriate and grossly insensitive given the word’s use and hideous connotations during the genocide in Rwanda, where it was used to incite the killing of Tutsis.

MMP wins a great victory over the word ‘alien’

The Media Monitoring Project has succeeded in their bid to prevent the Daily Sun from using the word ‘alien’ in their stories after appealing against the initial finding of the Press Ombudsman.

Media Monitoring Project submits complaint about Daily Sun reporting on xenophobia

After much speculation about the media’s influence on the recent outbreaks of xenophobic violence, Daily Sun is now subject of an official complaint about their coverage of non-nationals. The Media Monitoring Project (MMP) and its partner Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA) submitted a complaint with Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHCR) today.

Race, racism and xenophobia round table

The MMP is hosting this round table discussion to deliberate on practical mechanisms that can be put in place to encourage best practice reporting, minimise perpetuation of negative stereotypes and encourage respect for people’s rights to dignity and equality. The discussions are aimed at media practitioners, non-governmental organisations and government.
