- Women see modest gains in world news media portrayal, Coverage still betrays significant gender bias
Women are still significantly underrepresented and misrepresented in news media coverage. That’s according to Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) research coordinated by the World Association for Christian Communication. Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) was the data analyst for the project which looked at media coverage in 108 countries. Despite the continued underrepresentation of women in media identified in these latest results, the project has also seen significant change since it began 15 years ago.

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) has been sifting through the articles and submersing itself in reports, and here are our best and worst picks of media’s representation of women on the 9th August 2010, and in the days immediately before and after Women’s Day.
13 newspapers, all based in Gauteng, as well as television reports (ETV and SABC1, 2 and 3), were looked at as part of this qualitative project. This is just a quick snap shot of the winners and sinners on Women’s Day.

- Preliminary report of the 2010 Global Media Monitoring Project
Only 24% of persons seen, heard, or read about in the news are female.
This is one of the key findings of the 2010 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) The preliminary report is being released on 2 March 2010 at a panel discussion and debate on the occasion of the 54th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
