- Leadership Crisis at the SABC
Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) is deeply concerned by the ongoing governance crises at the SABC. The crises seemed to climax in 2007, however despite various attempts to bring stability we seem to be little further than where we were some three years ago, in terms of fundamentally addressing corporate governance issues. MMA believes that the appointment of the GCEO should be made by the SABC board alone.

What is digital migration? A mass movement of wild animals to the electronic media? Or moving from what we have to something better?
Why does South Africa need to proceed with digital migration?
Who benefits from this process? Is it all about money for the media or will it mean big benefits for viewers?
What is the main difference between analogue signal and digital signal?
What will you need to do in order to receive the digital signal? What are these so called set top boxes? Like black boxes for the home? How much will they cost? When can we get them? Will you need a new TV?
South Africa is currently in the process of the digital migration but have South African citizens really been informed about the issues and challenges of this process?
Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) in partnership with the Daily Maverick, the SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition together with expert panelists Robert Nkuna(Advisor to the Minister of Communications and a Councilor at ICASA) and Lara Kantor (Group Executive: Regulatory at ETV) will explore these issues during a live ‘Tweet-Up” this Friday, 24th June 2011 from 11am – 12 pm. Join us in person or on Twitter (#MMAdigimi) for the first of various discussions dealing with digital migration issues.

- Time for BCCSA to stand tall
MMA CALLS ON THE BCCSA TO STAND ITS GROUND IN THE FACE OF PRESSURE FROM THE SABC
Self regulation of the media is an important aspect of our democracy. It is for this reason that institutions that promote and protect the self regulatory aspect of our media are respected and protected. Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) is concerned by the manner in which the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has chosen to react to the ruling by the Broadcasting Complains Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) in the case of the SABC and the Mail and Guardian (M&G).

- Tweet-up Invitation - Gender: An Election Issue?
Are women an election issue? Media doesn’t seem to think so. During the last national elections in 2009, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) research showed that gender issues featured in just 1% of election stories.
On Wednesday 11th May 2011 at 12pm Janine Hicks (Commission on Gender Equality) and Lisa Vetten (Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre) will make the case for why gender should be an issue in the looming local elections.
MMA, Open Society Foundation, The Daily Maverick, Frayintermedia and GenderMattersZA are teaming up with the Commission on Gender Equality and Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre to launch the third “Piercing the Promises: Election Accountability Pack” for journalists.
Join us in person or on twitter for this, the last #MMAEAP tweet-up!

- Invite to: Service Delivery: An Election Issue?
In 2008 there were 27 service delivery protests recorded.
In 2009 that number jumped to 105.
In 2010, it was another record year for discontent – with 111 recorded protests.
This year the protests continued, with tragic loss of life.
But are the politicians heeding the calls of their unhappy electorate?
