Wondering what you can do for Mandela Day? Here’s Media Monitoring Africa’s suggestion: Spend 67 minutes reading and explaining the news to your children.

It’s a small gesture but it could have a big impact. Not only could it change your child’s approach to the media but you may be surprised at how much your child can teach you!

How can you do this? Simple: do the DRIVE!

Ask your children to count how many children’s stories they can find in the news then ask them to look for the following:

D = Diversity of children Are there boys and girls? Are the stories set in urban and rural areas? Who are the children and what are they doing?

R = Rights Respected Is the story in the best interests of the child?

I = Issues Are there a range of children’s issues in the news?  In other words: are the stories about children all about bad or sad or tragic things that happen to children or do you see children doing different and exciting things?

V = Voices heard? We may see children but how often do you actually hear their voices? For example; we know lots about the changes to the outcomes based education system but do we know what children have to say on the matter?

E = Ethical Coverage How would you feel if it was your child of if you were the child?  Would you want it reported that way?

Have fun with it and let us know how it goes. If you have any questions please contact us: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

If this goes well why not get you child to work out their TV diet?
